Every day I look at instagram posts that at best make me chuckle a bit, at worst make me question my own sanity, but always leave me with a sense of having wasted too much time that day on scrolling through the bottomless feed.

In total I spend about 1-2 hours per day on such silly activities, at least according to the time management utilities of my phone.

It’s not fulfilling, and I spend 5-10% of my time on that - why? I guess it’s just really really hard to quit habitual use of applications that are designed by psychology PhD’s with the goal of you spending as much time as possible in it - who would’ve thought?

I do not (yet) want to uninstall Instagram, because it’s very nice to see what friends are up to.

However, I do not intend to look at all the dumb stuff on the explore page, even though I often fall into that trap.

I see two ways to fix this problem

  • notice faster when I’m scrolling through dumb stuff and quit the app
  • open the app fewer times

For the most part, this is my responsibility.

But also, please stop sharing reels with me, because you’re making me open the app and making me look at the stuff I don’t want to look at.

Thanks
